HISTORY OF CONSERVATIVE
TREATMENT FOR SCOLIOSIS

Schroth Method

Developed in Germany in the 1920s by Katharina Schroth who had moderate scoliosis. She developed exercises and breathing techniques that made her own deformity less obvious and opened a clinic in 1921 to treat others.

Schroth Method was further developed and refined by Katherina's daughter,  Christa Lehnert-Schroth P.T. and grandson, Dr. Hans-Rudolph Weiss, MD.

Barcelona Scoliosis
Physical Therapy School

Founded by Dr. Manual Rigo to teach Schroth-based treatment, as well as advanced techniques, based on his own clinical experience and research, to physical therapists all around the world.

Janny Hineman
BMR (PT)

Janny Hineman provides Schroth-based physical therapy for clients with scoliosis in Calgary, Alberta. She graduated from the University of Manitoba and has 10 years of clinical experience in private practice.

She was diagnosed with scoliosis as a teenager and attended a Schroth-based clinic in Europe as a young adult to learn the exercise therapy for her personal use. The benefits Janny received from the exercise therapy made her desire to specialize in conservative treatment for scoliosis.

Janny obtained her C1 and C2 certification in 3D treatment for scoliosis, according to the principles of C.L Schroth, through the Barcelona Physical Therapy School (BSPTS). She was the first physiotherapist in Calgary to provide Schroth-based treatment for scoliosis and has been providing this treatment for clients over the past 6 years. Janny understands that a diagnosis of scoliosis can be overwhelming and stressful for both the client and their family members. She desires to minimize these stresses through education and empowerment of her clients. Janny works with clients of all ages whether they are a child or adolescent newly diagnosed with scoliosis or an older adult wanting to start the therapy.

It is the goal of BSPTS therapists to work as a team with doctors, orthotists, and surgeons specializing in scoliosis to provide clients the best treatment possible.

PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSESSMENT
& TREATMENT GOALS

Physiotherapist will assess:

  • X-rays to determine type of curve according to the Rigo Method and cobb angle
  • Posture
  • Trunk asymmetry and rotation
  • Rib cage expansion
  • Muscle imbalances including areas of tension and weakness
  • Breathing Capacity

Aims of treatment:

  • Decrease trunk asymmetry
  • Improve breathing capacity
  • Restore muscle balance and improve function
  • Decrease forces that promote progression of curve
  • Maintain postural improvements throughout daily activities
  • In some cases prevent curve progression and need for surgery

INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE PROGRAM

Physiotherapy includes intensive exercises that are specific to the client's type of curve and clinical presentation, with the aim of addressing changes that occur in all three planes of movement.
